Rafael Pena is committed to ensuring the preparedness education he provides on behalf of Red Cross and AmeriCorps is implemented effectively and professionally. Rafael is a full-time AmeriCorps member serving through the Together We Prepare AmeriCorps program at the Washtenaw-Lenawee Chapter of the American Red Cross. He is responsible for providing preparedness education within a two county area (population of 444,683). The service he provides is always done with AmeriCorps and American Red Cross principles at heart.

Rafael influences the development of many Red Cross volunteers, including youth. He provides the leadership necessary to administer quality programming, always ensuring that AmeriCorps, Red Cross, and preparedness education messages are conveyed internally and externally. Some of the accomplishments and highlights of Rafael's first year of service include the following:

  • Organized the second annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service for Washtenaw and Lenawee Counties (40 volunteers canvassed fire safety and preparedness education materials to 1,370 households, had 270 conversations, and distributed 6,000 pieces of material);

  • Organized the third annual March Gatoraiser (20 volunteers collect donations of water and Gatorade at local grocery stores);
  • Developed critical partnerships with agencies that service vulnerable populations, including HOPE Community Center, HOLA, Boys and Girls Club, Ypsilanti Safe Schools, and Chelsea Senior Center, among others;
  • Surpassed goals and expectations of numbers of preparedness education presentations (36), people reached (2,459) and materials distributed (10,180);
  • Convened Together We Prepare AmeriCorps members throughout the state to brainstorm and discuss collaboration;
  • Serves as a member of the Restoring Family Links Grant Implementation Team specifically for the planning of a World Refugee Day Event;
  • Taken an active role in further development and support of existing high school Red Cross clubs;
  • Helped build capacity in volunteer leadership in the Preparedness Education program and;
  • Responds to local and national disasters.

"I have observed, mentored, and worked closely with him and can say in confidence that he is very hardworking, sincere, and dedicated toward his responsibilities," stated site supervisor, Ashley Cieslinsk. "Rafael truly deserves to be appreciated for his efforts."

Storm Displaces Engaged College Couple

by Jenni Hawes, Disaster Public Affairs

Ryan Stock and Shilpa Jhobalia should be choosing china patterns, finalizing their guest list and picking out floral arrangements for their impending July wedding. Sadly, they are now picking up the pieces and trying to move forward from losing the entire contents of their basement level apartment. Many people know of the devastating tornado that rocked the city of Dexter Thursday, March 15, but what many people don’t realize is the city of Ann Arbor also received significant amounts of storm damage and flooding.

Ryan, a University of Michigan graduate student stated, “We’ve lost everything and I don’t know where to start….Birth certificates, passports, laptops. They’re all gone. I know they’re just things but….” He then took his fiancés hand. And with tears in his eyes and a half-hearted smile he said, “Honestly, in a disaster, the first thing I would ever grab is her….At least we have each other.”

The couple met when serving in the Peace Corp, stationed in the Dominican Republic and moved to Ann Arbor to support Ryan’s education.  Unfortunately, they do not have any family in the area for support; Ryan’s family is in the St. Louis area and Shilpa’s family is in Chicago.

Shilpa, a counselor for Easter Seals, with tears streaming down her face, described coming home and discovering her apartment had been destroyed. “There was 4 feet of water and raw sewage. I tried to pick up a bin with all of our important papers, wedding plans and they just disintegrated.  What are we going to do? Where are we going to go?”

Fortunately, the Red Cross immediately responded to the needs of the community by opening up a local shelter for those displaced from the flooding; providing food, a place to rest their heads and comfort.

Ryan stated, “I can’t believe you all are doing this for us. Your volunteers have families, jobs and lives and here you are in the middle of the night, here to help us. You’re the best.”Ryan and Shilpa will have some challenges ahead of them, but will be side by side and take comfort in knowing there isn’t a storm strong enough to break them apart, not break their spirit.

Blood Battle - Celebrating 30 Years!

Buddy

Only 6 days left until Blood Battle!

The University of Michigan faces off against an Ohio State University for the 30th annual Blood Battle! Every year, in the two and a half weeks preceding the football game the two schools extend their rivalry off the field as the school’s students, faculty, and staff compete to see which University can collect more pints of blood. Community members are encouraged to donate as well. The University of Michigan has won the last three years, and hopes to extend their winning streak by collecting over 2,550 pints of blood!

The history of Blood Battle goes back to 1966 when the students of Alpha Phi Omega sponsored and hosted the first blood drives on the Michigan campus. By 1982, the drives had expanded so much that the organizers took advantage of their success and the rivalry with the Buckeyes to hold the first Blood Battle. The University of Michigan won and a tradition was born.

Recent years have seen close competitions. In 2007, U of M lost by a mere three pints - the equivalent to three donors - when both schools collected over 2000 pints. It was Michigan's sixth straight loss in the battle, and OSU was closing the gap on Michigan's overall win record.

With an overwhelming showing by the student body and an incredible display of school spirit, Michigan broke OSU's streak in 2008, and went on to win in 2009.

In 2010, both U of M and OSU collected more pints of blood than the year before. U of M defended the championship by collecting 2,615 pints of blood collected on campus in Ann Arbor  as opposed to 2,515 pints collected in Columbus by the Buckeyes.

This year Blood Battle runs November 3rd - November 18th with drives held all over Michigan’s campus. Come help Michigan beat OSU again by visiting redcrossblood.org (sponsor code: goblue) to schedule an appointment to donate blood. For more information about Blood Battle, visit bloodbattle.org.
